#19 Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day everyone! We are back!

Well spring sprung early this year and all of a sudden we were overwhelmed with phone calls and emails and rushing about trying to get some crews up and running. On top of this we spent a good chunk of our winter home schooling too many children, so we didn’t have time for our usual de-brief of the previous season and planning for the season ahead.

All of this has resulted in a crazier than usual beginning to the 2021 gardening season here! The last month we’ve been scrambling to keep up! But here we go, in full swing, so it’s time to get back to blogging! And what a perfect day for beginning again-Earth Day!

As gardeners, the earth, its beauty and bounty, is what governs our daily life. We work to connect people to the earth. Our vision statement reads…

“We at Gaia’s Gardens strive to positively connect our community to the natural world around us by creating places of sanctuary and comfort. We believe this connection has the potential to improve the health of the individual, the community and in turn the entire living earth.”

We want to share our passion for gardening and in a broader sense, our passion for observing, understanding, interacting with, appreciating and valuing the earth.

It is far too easy these days to get caught up in the tides of media, the opinions of so many drowning us in an overwhelming wave of fear, guilt and anxiety.

This is when we need to turn to the earth. The constancy of the sunrise and the sunset. The beauty in a flower. The magic of a seed becoming nourishment and medicine. The coming of spring.

As we can observe these past couple of days, ‘set backs’ like damaging frosts and snow when WE BELIEVE it should be warmer can put us in a negative mindset in a hurry. Not unlike events in our lives that throw a wrench in our plans, we can find the positives and the opportunities in these set backs or we can let them dampen our days. Nature teaches us spring will come regardless.

I could go on forever about the research that has been done connecting our well-being to time spent in nature but I think the point here is for you to experience it for yourself. So here is Gaia’s Earth Day challenge for you…start today spending regular time outside (but be warned, this may become an addiction). Try this for a month. Try it as a daily practice and if it can be the same place or walking route every day, even better. Even just a morning coffee or an evening glass of something on your deck or porch. Spend the time using your 5 senses to observe the natural world around you. Shut the rest of the world out and feel yourself relax. We are betting this will change your world for the better!
